I really love helping folks find outfits and creating looks in polyvore. I also love answering various questions about fit/styles for shapes/etc.
Here are some guidelines of how to best utilize the “ask” button for InTheThickOfIt so I can provide answers for you that fit your needs
1) If you are asking me anonymously, I would really love it if you could include an email address for me to contact you with follow-up questions and so I can let you know when your question will be addressed. I’m trending towards not answering tons of completely anon questions.
2) Please list your size range
3) Please include a general price range
4) Please let me know what sort of styles you like (femme, butch, casual, or a style icon works too)
5) Any other details that might be helpful (if you are a specific shape that you want me to think about when looking for items)
Finding a plus size coat can be a challenge, especially in stores, but there are some stores I can recommend for in-person shopping and online! I love being able to try coats on so I can make sure they’ll provide the coverage I want. I prefer a wool coat for most of the winter, but there are some Chicago days that really require something super thick like a puffer jacket and snow boots. I personally love coats that have some special details - whether it’s a pretty waistline detail or some unusual situation going on with the neck. And of course my favorite way to really mix things up for the winter is with accessories (scarves/gloves/hats), but I’ll be posting something separate for that.
Macys has a great selection both in store and online. They don’t allow for importing on polyvore, so I’ve linked some examples below.
If you’re on the smaller end of plus size, Old Navy and Target can be an option. They’ve both got selections in the straight size line up to about a size 16/18. Additionally I can recommend in store shopping at the following stores which tend to have a well-stocked plus size section: JC Penny, Nordstrom, Dillards, and some of the discount stores like Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls (if you feel like digging around).
Also for those of us that live in VERY cold climates, I can highly recommend Lands End. They’ve got a great selection of VERY WARM coats in extended sizes. But they stop at size 3X.
For my readers that are over size 3x, there are some great coats at Woman Within up to size 40 and LLBean has sizes up to 26
Can you help me find some high waisted wide leg jeans in plus size? I've wanted to get a pair ever since i saw them around in the summer but have not been able to find any, not even regular wide leg jeans.
Hi there! I try to know everything I can about what's going in the fashion/style universe, but I'm afraid plus size clothing is really a blind spot of mine (probably due to how marginalized it is). But I was wondering-- do you know some good retailers of suits for plus size women? Price is no object. I'm especially interested in more masculine of center styles. My friend asked me about it and I've found the internet a very difficult place for plus size clothing.
Plus size suiting
Finding cute suits for plus size can be such a challenge, but there are a few retailers that have really stepped up to provide gorgeous classic suiting for plus size women.
My go-to is Talbots. They have a fantastic collection of suiting for sizes 12W-24W. Gorgeous cuts and beautiful different weight fabrics are their specialty. Like this lovely pinstripe flannel
which in addition to pants, also has a matching skirt, sheath dress, vest, and three other styles of jackets
If you are looking for a more butch/dapper queer/ androgynous look, I would recommend custom suiting from The Butch Clothing Company (terrible website, but I’ve heard good things about their product) or Indochino.
Also a new resource that just popped up is the new Eloquii line by the Limited, which really has some beautiful classic suiting pieces.
So I'm looking for a dress I can wear to a work holiday party and also to a friend's wedding. My problem area are my arms - I feel like they are so disproportionate to the rest of my body. I'm 5'2", 187 lbs and wear a size 14 most of the time, but a 16 when my arms won't fit into the sleeve :( What dress styles do you think might work for me?
I have pulled together a selection of sleeveless and large-sleeve holiday dresses for you. Several of these dresses are from eShakti, which does custom sizing if you want - which is a great option for those of us that don’t fit in off-the-rack sizes. The other dresses are from Nordstrom, which provides tailoring as well, should you need it.
The sleeveless dresses could easily be paired with a cute wrap or short jacket - i’d be happy to style one of these looks for you if there’s one or two you’re interested in. I’m particularly fond of the Adrianna Papell Lace & Knit dress - it just screams HOLIDAY PARTY
Let me know if you’d like more options or if you have more specific requirements you’d like me to search for.
