Winter Coats for Plus Size Bodies

I’m going to be featuring a few different coats this week that work for plus size bodies.

This beautiful quilted coat by Firetrap Kingdom is perfect for a chilly day. It comes my way from the UK shop SportsDirect.com that has a lovely selection of jackets up to UK size 22 (US 18/20).

The detail on this coat is perfect - the gold snaps are a unique shape and the belt at both the collar and waist are not just for show - they actually work and work well.  I love the funnel neck opening and the belt detail at the neck.  It’s a short coat, so probably best for a chilly day and not when it’s negative temps.  Chicago has been so cold this winter, so I was happy when I got to wear this jacket out on a beautiful winter day.

Keeping warm this winter…

For those of us that live in cold climates, it can be a struggle to stay warm and fashionable!  Chicago is a bitter city in the winter and I am always on the look-out for fun jackets and accessories for the cold days.  Additionally, it’s also so important to me to stay nice and warm in my house as well.

So here are a few indoor and outdoor items for you to enjoy this winter.

White 4’ Pre-lit Christmas tree - A chic and easy way to dress up your home for christmas

Patricia Green Slippers - Don’t let your toes go cold at home - instead of socks, try these CUTE lined ballet house slippers

Topshop Chunky Chain Scarf - I hate it when i lose the look of wearing a necklace when i’m wearing a scarf - here’s a cute way to accessorize with some added details

Oxblood Dotty Gloves - these sweet oxblood leather gloves will add a femme touch to any winter outfit

Cut Out Heart Gloves - another precious pair of gloves that just add a sweet detail on your hands

Short Puff Jacket - for those cold days when a puffy jacket is just necessary, this little coat is a stylish version to reach for

Mix Texture Jacket - this pretty coat is so on-trend with faux-leather sleeves and a wool-blend torso.  Great for a chilly day!

Red Fit-and-Flare - This style of coat just screams SWEET! The color is perfect for a cold gray day.

Art Institute Membership - Is there any better way to spend a freezing winter day than by browsing the beautiful art at The Art Institute Chicago?  I didn’t think so.

Chunky Sweater Throw - for those nights when you’re curled up on the couch watching television or reading a book, this pretty chunky throw will keep you warm and will look good in your house too!

The Oversized Winter Hooded Coat.

I waiver between wanting to wear skin-tight clothing and wanting to wear giant oversized drapey things.  There’s something so fantastic about enveloping my body in warm things - especially in the winter.

When I saw this vintage camel coat at the thrift store a few weeks ago, I just knew I needed it in my wardrobe.  It’s rich warm luxurious camel colored wool, lined with peach satin.  I love that it can be more fitted using the drawstring toggles.  I’m also a sucker for a giant hood.  It’s just perfect.

The Dark Green Plush Vintage Swing Coat

I found this coat at a vintage store last year.  I was just in love with it, but then hesitated when it came to actually wearing it.  And so it sat in my closet for an entire year, completely untouched.  I’d really forgotten about it.  And then last week while out on the town, a gorgeous femme was wearing almost the exact same coat!  I remembered my beautiful coat and decided I had to bring it out of hiding.

I paired it with a beautiful vintage acrylic rose-print scarf and  a gaudy gold michael kors belt.

Finding a plus size coat can be a challenge, especially in stores, but there are some stores I can recommend for in-person shopping and online!  I love being able to try coats on so I can make sure they’ll provide the coverage I want.  I prefer a wool coat for most of the winter, but there are some Chicago days that really require something super thick like a puffer jacket and snow boots.  I personally love coats that have some special details - whether it’s a pretty waistline detail or some unusual situation going on with the neck.  And of course my favorite way to really mix things up for the winter is with accessories (scarves/gloves/hats), but I’ll be posting something separate for that.

Macys has a great selection both in store and online.  They don’t allow for importing on polyvore, so I’ve linked some examples below.

Calvin Klein Plus Toggle Hooded Coat Size 0X-3X

Dollhouse Faux Fur Coat Size 1X-3X

Calvin Klein Plus Faux Fur Size 0X-3X

If you’re on the smaller end of plus size, Old Navy and Target can be an option.  They’ve both got selections in the straight size line up to about a size 16/18.  Additionally I can recommend in store shopping at the following stores which tend to have a well-stocked plus size section: JC Penny, Nordstrom, Dillards, and some of the discount stores like Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls (if you feel like digging around).

Also for those of us that live in VERY cold climates, I can highly recommend Lands End.  They’ve got a great selection of VERY WARM coats in extended sizes.  But they stop at size 3X.

For my readers that are over size 3x, there are some great coats at Woman Within up to size 40 and LLBean has sizes up to 26
